Our school was very badly damaged during hurricane Sandy. The building was flooded and it led to over 32,000 gallons of oil being spilled into the school. Our class is now left without the basic supplies we need for everyday learning.
My first graders are an amazing, inquisitive bunch of children who love to learn.
Unfortunately the last few weeks have been very hard as the children have not only suffered extreme losses at home but our beloved school as well. We are currently sharing space in an already overcrowded school, which has lead to the need to place 40-50 children in a classroom. We've lost all of our supplies and our sense of security. We as a school community are trying our best to get back on our feet and return our children to a place where they don't have to worry about anything other than being a child.
My Project
The supplies I've requested are to help our children express their feelings through art projects and day to day classroom work. We need paint, brushes, paper, markers, scissors, chart tablets and a chart stand. Due to the storm we've lost our textbooks and workbooks, so I've requested a document viewer so that I can project onto the wall the subject matter that we are working on, giving all the children the front row advantage.
This project is so important because the children need to feel that they are at "home" in their new relocated classroom.
There has been no return date set for our own school and with their parents stressed to the limit we need these supplies to help create our new normal.
