Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth-grade students are enthusiastic bilingual students. They are a group of diverse learners who are eager to learn and in engage in the world around them.
My students are mostly immigrant and first-generation Latino students living in a vibrant low-income and working-class neighborhood in Chicago.
Our school is a large, public neighborhood school dedicated to a bright future for our students. However, limited funding results in fewer resources and opportunities for our students. This is especially harmful to our highest need students, our new immigrant students and our struggling readers.
My Project
As a reading teacher, my primary job is to help my students develop a love for reading. With the help of generous donors like you, I have curated a library full of high-interest books. However, the majority of my books are in English. This year, almost a third of my students are immigrants, and seven of them are recent immigrants. I received a new student last week from Honduras, and I knew that I had to do more to get Spanish books into these students' hands.
My immigrant students deserve books written in their home language, Spanish.
With Spanish books, my students will be able to access the same grade-level work as their peers. This is critical in order for my immigrant students to learn and to succeed.
