Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our TK-8 school serves 645 students, predominantly Latinx, Indigenous, African-American & Asian/Pacific Islander. As a Title I school, 100% of our students are entitled to free lunch and extended social services. We went from a closed library and zero circulations to almost 6,000 our first year and almost 10,000 our second year of service!

Our students LOVE reading!

Whether in Transitional Kindergarten or 8th grade, they love coming to the library to hear a picture book or novel. Studies prove that students who have access to a curated library collection, and a qualified librarian, have improved literacy skills, including comprehension and writing skills. This is especially important to build dual language literacy skills for our ELL newcomers.

Our collection focuses on culturally relevant books, to engage students with stories they can relate to, and explore stories different from their own. Our readers deserve the best in library services! Some students come to the library as their only quiet place to read. They need new, high quality, high interest, current, & culturally relevant books in their hands AND a comfy place to curl up and read! Our students are prolific readers!

My Project

It's tough to build a dual language library from scratch, but that's where you come in! We have so few texts in Spanish, it's embarrassing to admit to you. Let's just say that when the dual language teachers ask students to pick out at least 1 book in Spanish for silent reading, there are not enough, so they are forced to choose a beat up, sad, uninteresting book or none.

As their librarian, it's my job to keep students engaged and excited about reading books that interest AND challenge them!

The books requested in this project are essential to keep kids engaged in reading. Most of the elementary books I have chosen are between $4-15. A few Middle School books are between $10-20. The book list I curated is filled with newer, high interest titles, subjects, or authors. Thank you for your generosity, in purchasing new exciting books in Spanish, to support a bilingual education that will afford our students life-long opportunities!
