Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students love to read about animals, mysteries, adventures, history, science, and more! They read with our partners from AmeriCorps, they read with their reading buddies, and they read in the classroom. Some also read at home. However, many still don't and those that do read at home don't have a great selection to choose from.
Our students love reading every chance they get, so let's help them have more opportunities to do so!
Our school is a one-school-district with close to 300 students in grades TK-8th. 71% are English learners and 91% are socioeconomically disadvantaged. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch. Many of our students live in camps located near the school. Crop fields and dirt roads surround our community. Being the only school in Chualar, it is the place where student's dreams live and thrive.
My Project
Students will never forget this Literacy Night and with these books they will continue to embrace their love of reading independently and for fun. They will choose a book that catches their eye and will hold on to it along with great memories of this night! The school is a place where they love to read, but I strive to extend that love of reading to their home and everywhere they go as they read and care for those books they will own.
Leo Lionni is the theme of our Literacy Night, for as I watch my students read I notice they enjoy his books and I want to enrich their minds with great honors books that all children deserve to have.
The students will be able to choose books, which will help them to hold on to that love of reading they have. They will continue to enjoy independent reading time at home or anywhere they go. The best way to increase reading fluency and comprehension is to read more, and these books will help my students to continue becoming strong readers. The Literacy Night will motivate families to embrace reading at home and these gifted books will be their treasured tools as my students grow.
