Our school is a small PreK-6, rural school that has received numerous awards. In the past five years, we have earned the Federal Blue Ribbon, the Blue Ribbon Lighthouse, and the National Title I Distinguished School awards. We have accomplished musicians, artists, and athletes among our students. They are also committed to giving back to their community, which they demonstrate by working on school sponsored service projects and fundraisers.
Our students come from diverse economic backgrounds, but share a bond of community that creates a welcoming, supportive culture for all.
Some of my students are 3rd and 4th generation students of our school. Their parents have had the same teachers they have. That sense of community allows us to trust each other when we set high expectations and provide challenging work.
My Project
My students come to the library twice a week for traditional literacy and digital literacy skills as well as hands-on making activities. Their library class time is a time they can pursue the topics that interest them from the classroom at their pace and with the variety of books and tools we have available in our school library.
They are creative learners who thrive on hands-on activities that allow them to share what they learn with others.
We have been blessed with 10 brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab A devices, but we need sturdy cases so that students of all ages can use them safely. They also enjoy having puzzles and hands-on activities, like the Marble Run, to keep them creating and problem solving while waiting for others to finish checking out books or complete group activities. The library is a busy learning space and tools like these help my students learn to be independent, motivated learners.
