This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
SFACS sits in a poverty stricken area of Philadelphia. My students do not go out and play at home due to concerns for their safety, which include gun violence and drugs. When at school they are safe but are confined to the building and gated lot. My students struggle academically and were used to failure until this year. In September they could barely read and were okay with a C. They are beginning to make strides.
My Project
When children become engrossed in a book it can open a world of inquiries, exploration, discovery, learning and fun. Due to my students' economic background their experiences are limited to school, video games and the internet. No one reads to them. I want to share the world with my students through both fiction and nonfiction stories. I want my students to look forward to choosing a book and sitting comfortably in our library area reading independently or with a partner. Adding these chosen books and cushions into our library will entice my students to want to read more and more.
