My Students

"Never Give Up!" is something you will hear my students chanting in the classroom throughout the year. I teach second grade reading in a Title I school, in Washington DC, where all of my students receive free lunch. The challenges my students face as seven-year-olds are surreal; however, they consistently rise to meet these challenges head on. At the beginning of the school year, we discuss how learning to read might not be easy, and there are going to be times we want to quit. No matter what, we need to make sure we "Never Give Up!"

My students beat the odds every single day.

Statistics says that the majority of my students won't be reading on grade level when they enter Third grade and will continue to fall further and further behind. This is why I think it is so important that my students build a solid foundation in literacy. Despite these statistics, ninety percent of my students leave Second grade reading at or above grade level. They are closing the achievement gap and showing everyone how important it is to "Never Give Up!"

My Project

My students are loving our classroom library. I want to keep the library fresh and exciting for my eager readers. I find that when the library is homey and organized the students enjoy their time reading more.

This project will allow me to upgrade a lot of our library bins and make our library feel more like home.

As our interests in books continues to grow, I want to make sure that I am able to keep the books in our classroom library well organized and easily accessible for my students. These new book bins will allow for our library to have a great organization system.
