Library Refresh: Getting Kids Excited About Reading
My students need new, high-quality books to get them excited about reading, as well as a comfy place to sit while they read.

My Students
My students are a group of urban kids from various economic backgrounds who have a desire and motivation to learn and grow. They walk into my classroom with smiles on their faces and do their best to be fully engaged in their work each day. The students are a close-knit group and motivate each other to do their best.
These students make up a Title I school where 95% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch every day.
They know their classrooms are safe environments and look to their teachers not only as educators, but as mentors as well. They have a never-ending energy and bring a brightness to any classroom they walk into.
My Project
There's nothing better than a new book. There's also nothing like a 7th grader's face when they open a brand new book and realize they will be the FIRST ONE to read this particular book in their class. Even when books are not brand new, students are thrilled to FINALLY have their turn with the book that every kid in their class wants to read.
Building this kind of anticipation and excitement, of presenting reading as a reward, is what gets kids reading.
Having a wide range of reading materials - of different levels and different genres - makes the library accessible to ALL students. And, like all of us, students appreciate a comfy, cozy spot to dig into their chosen books. Backjack chairs make the perfect reading spot - they're comfortable and durable!
