My 3rd graders are learning to decode words and to read fluently so that they can expend their energies on comprehending the text. This is particularly important because of the steadily increasing amount of non-fiction that they will be required to read and understand in all content areas.
My students want to do well and are enthusiastic learners.
I have an extensive library that needs to be organized by reading level and genre so that they can use it to the fullest. Organizing by author or by reading level is not enough. The books need to be narrowed one more time by genre, favorite author, or series. When students find one of these categories to their liking, they read more and become better readers and writers.
My Project
Reading is everything. As you go through the day, make a mental note of how much you need to read just to get through the day! It is astonishing. A wide vocabulary is necessary in order to communicate effectively. Experiencing other people's stories, fiction or non-fiction, helps children to make connections with their own lives and to grow emotionally as well as intellectually.
I am requesting 2 packs of colored book bins so they can easily choose a book at their current reading level and by favorite genre or author.
Having a fully accessible library will allow my students to choose books that interest them and allow them to branch out into other genres and authors.
I have an extensive collection of trade books that I have bought and been given over the last ten years. I am happiest when a book's spine gives way, the pages are dog-eared, and there is an informal waiting line for books being read by students. "When you finish that, can you give it to me?" I will happily replace such books!
