Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Have you ever tried to settle down with a good book while sitting upright in a hard chair? Probably not, we want to be comfortable while we read and reading in the classroom is no different! Help my students get the library area they deserve so that they love reading and become life long readers!

Our school in one of Chicago's low-income neighborhoods is a turnaround school this year due to a history of poor academic achievement.

The students are nervous about the changes and don't know what to expect. Resources are limited and the classroom environment is crucial to the students sense of comfort, security, and ability to learn. I want to create a beautiful, inviting, and comfortable learning space for my 3rd graders. The library area is just the place to do that. A spot in the room where they can relax, open a book and slip into another world.

My Project

My students will benefit greatly from the new rug which we will use for whole group learning such as read alouds, morning meetings, math calendar activities and more. They will also use the rug and the futon seating during independent reading time. The book bins and bookshelf will make the library accessible organized. Students will be able to easily choose books based on their reading levels after the bins are leveled. This will allow them to make achievement gains by reading at their independent level and they will also be able to develop their comprehension skills.

Donating to my Classroom Library area will positively affect the happiness and academic achievement of my students for years to come.

Donating will help close the academic achievement gap between students of poverty and students not living in poverty by providing a comfortable, safe, and inviting environment in which my students can develop their literacy skills, and more importantly, develop a love of reading that will stay with them their entire lives!
