Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at school are hard working, creative and lots of fun to be around. They continue to amaze me every day with their resilience and positivity.
Over 90% of the students here are learning English as their second language.
A lot of the students have overcome great obstacles such as poverty, trauma, and problems associated with migration. Many of them are second or third generation from Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador or other Spanish speaking countries.
Students work hard to create a welcoming, safe and accepting environment for everyone at Guadalupe. We want to honor their background while encouraging a love of learning and books.
This is their first year to have a library and have the ability to check out books. They are so excited. They love coming in to read and do other activities.
My Project
We a looking for donations to update our nonfiction library collection to suit the growing needs of the student population it serves. Almost all of our nonfiction titles are outdated and contain science/history information that is no longer relevant or accurate. We have recently done some weeding of these older books and are currently trying to replace them with eye-catching, up to date titles that explore exciting nonfiction topics in Science, History, Social Studies, and Geography.
Our school does not have the funding for designated Social Studies, History, or Geography classes so our goal is to provide our kids with a library that has access to resources on these subjects with close attention to the diverse backgrounds of our students.
Many of the kids who attend our school, being Latinx or other POC, need a collection that represents their cultures in a positive light which provides educational resources that explore historical figures, countries, and histories they can see themselves in! We hope to create an in depth library curriculum that surveys nonfiction research to help foster lifelong learners with a curiosity in both the STEM and Social Sciences.
