Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are kids who love coming to their library. As a district, we have been hit with tough times due to flooding. Our schools were closed, our homes were flooded and many lost everything they owned.
School is one safe place our students can count on.
The library took a hard hit, but we are slowly rebuilding and the students are coming in crowds. They can't wait for our books and shelves and furniture to be replaced.
We want our library to have a space for students to let their imaginations soar. We want to provide supplies for DYI projects like coding and robotics games and crafts.
My Project
My project will involve an area within our library that will house books, robots, games, electronics and anything else that will catch and hold students' attention to make them want to use their hands and minds to create. I want to see students building robots, writing code and even working on crafts like beading. Hands-on activities promote reasoning skills, analytical skills and prediction.
I'm trying to appeal to both boys and girls by providing a variety of projects.
I need coding books and software, duct tape projects, robot kits, Lego core kits and bins to store it all. The coding books will teach students computer science skills and present a basic knowledge of how to use Scratch and HTML to build a web page. This is a valuable marketable skill. The robot kits will give students an introduction to robotics and engineering. The craft books inspire creativity and teach sequencing and reasoning.
I expect STEM students first, but I'm determined to make this Maker's Space an area that all students want to visit. Projects that require students to use their hands activates multiple areas of the brain-visual, kinesthetic and listening and it can build social skills.
