Imagine your teacher gives you the opportunity to pick a cozy spot in the classroom to read your favorite book, but when you look around your only option is to lay on the cement floor or the overcrowded rug. This is the reality for the students in my class. Our goal is to foster a love for reading and the great part is students have the opportunity to pick books they are interested in and get comfortable while they are reading.
We are a charter school in South Los Angeles, which means most of our resources are donation based or teacher purchased.
We adopted a reading curriculum that allows students to get lost in books and even encourages students to pick a reading spot. Right now, the options students have are their desks, laying on the concrete floor, or three students can lay on the rug in the front of the room. In order to continue to instill the love of reading I need to add more comfortable reading spots in the room.
With comfy floor pillows and seats the students will be able to get excited about reading time. We have adopted Daily 5 and Reader's workshop, which both allow students the opportunity to choose. Studies show that if students are given the opportunity to choose what books to read and where to read them their interest for reading will grow. The flexible library seating will allow the students to step away from their desks, stretch out, and get comfortable reading their books. I have a designated library area where these seats already have a home waiting for them.
The donations to this project will help my students grow as readers.
The more students read the more they grow their comprehension skills. The growth in comprehension skills will help them become better readers and raise their test scores. Students will grow more if they are comfortable instead of just sitting at their desks or laying on the floor. I have a wide variety of books in the library, not I just need the seating to make reading time complete.
