My Students
My 3rd grade classroom is a place with a lot of enthusiasm for learning. Students spend a lot of time working together and learning from one another. They are motivated and gritty! They have a great way of showing pride in their work in all subjects.
Most of my students come from low-income families.
My students know what hard work can do. We live by a creed at PECS. "We believe in the creation of inspired lives produced by the miracle of hard work. We are not frightened by the challenges of reality but believe that we can change our conception of this world and our place within it. So we work, plan, build and dream – in that order. We believe that one must earn the right to dream. Our talent, discipline, and integrity will be our contribution to a new world because we believe that we can take this place, this time and these people, and make a better place, a better time and a better people. With God’s help, we will either find a way or make one."
My students know how to find a way to make one!
My Project
My students love DEAR (Drop Everything And Read). In our classroom, we spend 25 minutes every day doing DEAR and it is also a great activity to do when they finish an assignment early. While my students love DEAR. Finding the right book can be difficult, time-consuming, and sometimes even frustrating due to our lack of organizational tools. Our current bookshelf has 3 shelves and is about 3 feet tall. This leaves us little room for bins and space for our growing library. I want to offer my students a more organized library where they can easily browse. This library makeover with new book bins and shelves would make TREMENDOUS difference in our classroom. Not only will it help organize the books into categories, but it will make it look so much more inviting. The more my students read, the more words they will be exposed to, and the better readers they will become. This means their comprehension and test scores will improve as well. I'm excited to see how motivating this new library will be for all of my students. I also requested a few headphones for the students who use applications on tablets during DEAR to practice reading.
