As a school librarian, I work with all students in my middle school, which is over 50% free and reduced lunch.

Research shows that as African American males mature, their library usage decreases. Test scores for this group are noticeably lower in our school. This decrease in library usage is due in large part to the perception that there are no books that are relevant to their lives.

One way to overcome this perception is to introduce students to books that have characters to whom they can relate and subjects that interest them. My idea is to host a book discussion group once a week during lunch. We will read "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers and discuss the book. Students will be able to discuss the book with their peers and hopefully understand that there are books that interest them.

Your help will allow me to have copies of this high-interest novel for my students and they will understand it can be "cool" to read.
