My students need chairs that are not breaking and falling apart. In the library students work and read at their tables, and need chairs that won't pinch their hands because of cracking seats.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a district with students of high poverty. I see all students at our school in grades K-5. These students have very limited experiences outside of their own neighborhood. I am the librarian, and when my students come to me, I would like to be able to expose them to what a real library is like. This is likely an experience that they wouldn't otherwise get.
Our school is where these students come to learn, but also is often a safe haven for them to relax.
I try to do that by making my library an inviting learning environment, where they feel welcomed and safe.
My Project
This is my second year in this library. The tables are falling apart with broken legs and the laminate is chipping. All the chairs are mismatched and some have broken seats that pinch and cut students fingers. I would like to replace all 8 tables and 32 chairs to make a safer, more attractive and welcoming space for my students.
In any given week, 475 students will be using the tables and chairs in the library.
Each of the 18 classes that come to the library weekly are in here for 50 minute increments. During that time they check out books, work at the tables and read. Having the chairs and tables to accommodate all of them daily would be greatly beneficial.
