From the moment the bell rings, the excitement and energy for learning is bursting through the halls of our school. As the reading teacher, my mission is to expose students to books they WANT to read. An individual copy allows a student to interpret the book in his or her OWN way. Isn't that what reading is all about?
My 5th grade class is a unique, creative bunch who are eager to learn and try new things.
Access to resources and materials for ALL students can be a challenge given that about 50% of the school's population receives free or reduced lunch. My goal, as a public school teacher, is to have each student feel just as involved as the next; regardless of family circumstances.
My Project
Research supports students being more engaged in their books. It should be a two-way street! The words leap from the page and leave an image in our mind we might want to talk through. Therefore, when students receive their own copy, leaving opinions through annotating text can happen naturally! Students will be guided in underlining, highlighting, and creating connections between ideas with modeled annotation; moving towards independent annotation by the end of the year.
We need 100 copies of the award-winning Mr. Lemoncello's Library, a high-quality, exciting text for intermediate readers.
This donation will improve my classroom in several ways.
First, it will provide students with their OWN book; showing them the REAL way to read is to "dirty" up the book! Also, students have strong opinions and sometimes a voice is hard to find in a classroom of 30 or more, so finding THEIR voice is important. Lastly, when a student has his or her own copy, the sense of ownership to the reading process greatly increases. Please help me turn this dream into a reality.
