Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My wonderful students come from the neighborhood around the school and are a delight to teach. We are a Title I school, and the boys and girls represent a diverse population. I love my position as the school librarian and enjoy seeing the classes once per week. I do a variety of activities with my students and always want to learn more. They get so excited when we come to the library and learn new thing in different and unique ways. Literacy in our primary focus in the library.
My Project
The school librarians in my state meet each September for a conference in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Tennessee Association of School Librarians coordinates this Professional Development event. The three-day conference allows librarians to present activities, techniques, and teaching strategies that they have used in their personal libraries that work. Book authors come to this conference to share the books they have written and how you can incorporate these books into your literacy program. Guest speakers come from all over the county to speak and do work sessions with school librarians.
I was able to go to this conference last year for the first time and I learn SO MUCH!!!
Ours school budget gets smaller and smaller each and every year. There will not be funding available next year for fabulous Professional Development opportunities like this one.
I came back from the conference with a list of ways I could get the students more excited about reading. It has been a joy to teach literacy in new ways to all my students. I work every day to improve our student's literacy skills. The majority of our students are in our English as a Second Language classes. We all implement a variety of creative teaching techniques to help these students improve their vocabulary and literacy skills.
Your donations will cover just my hotel and registration for the conference. I will pay all the other expenses. Please consider supporting my schools' library and our student's literacy skills by making a donation to this project. It will allow me to attend the Tennessee Association of School Librarians conference.
