All my students are truly amazing. They are bright and youthful, full of hope and passionate. I believe in them and know they can succeed. We all can make a difference in a child's life.
The students in my classroom have a variety of eligibilities.
Many of them have experienced severe trauma by the age of six or seven. My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class struggles with academics, social skills, focus, the ability to cope with feelings.
Our department budget is low, and our classroom has outdated library books for all three grade levels K-2. Special education teachers deliver excellent core instruction in all academic areas. We need to update their silent reading time during downtime and post recesses.
My Project
My students love to read, look at, and explore books. They are still learning to read but never object to silent reading or independent reading time, in fact, they look forward to it. There are several times when my second graders read to my kindergartners.
I'm requesting a variety of book sets including the Barefoot Book, I'm Curious About, Biographies, Matter, Solar System, Insects, Weather, Healthy & Fit, and Basic Concepts.
The new books and audiobooks will be a tremendous welcome to our classroom library. We graciously have been accumulating hand me down books over the years and these books are tattered and well below grade level.
Giving our classroom a library lift will enhance my students' literacy skills. These books will aid in their academic development by connecting fiction to content standards. They will also give all the students independent access to the material through the use of the audiobooks.
