At MHS in Portland, Oregon, our student population is representative of the world. We are a school that is one of the most diverse by race and ethnicity in Portland. The school is 21% Black, 25% Hispanic, 24% Asian, and 30% White.
The need is great for schools in lower income communities to have access to technology; we run a 100% Free and Reduced-Price lunch program.
At MHS there is very little access to computers. Students will benefit from direct instruction with technology and a rich exchange with pen pals.
Students at our high school are eager to learn, go to college and start careers. They need these supports to be successful and prepared to have the choice to go on to quality, full lives.
Students at MHS do not have enough Spanish novels which are low to intermediate level (ACTFL) to maintain a high interest reading program. These funds will contribute to the development of a Spanish 1/2 class library that will be loved and promote literacy for years to come.
MHS is a diverse school by race, ethnicity, class and multiple languages spoken; this makes our school brilliant for language learners as students accelerate at second and third language learning.
These books will advance the reading goals at our school.
The funding will increase literary in Spanish with a goal of all first year Spanish students reach a Novice High to Intermediate level of reading proficiency. Thanks for your consideration of this very important project.
