Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Library & Technology teacher, I see close to 800 students come into our school library every week, Our library services 1st through 5th grade. For many of these boys and girls, this is one of the few places they will see such a large selection of books.
My students deserve to come to a school where their needs can be met and where they can feel success in all areas.
My students come from predominantly immigrant households where English is a second language. Their parents work long hours, many with multiple jobs to make sure they can provide for their families. They want to give their children everything they can, and so do I.
My students are thoughtful and creative. They work hard to overcome learning difficulties and language barriers. They have a thirst for knowledge, but unfortunately they face many barriers that inhibit success. It is important to me that my students understand that success in school is more than being able to score well on a test. I want to provide my students with what they need to reignite their curiosity and passions--where they can explore and feel part of a community.
My Project
As students start coming into the library again for specials, we need our students to be able to complete work, at a distance from each other. Our current tables don't allow us the distance that we need. In a past order, we received 10 lap desks.
These lap desks work so well that we would like to purchase 10 more so we can have a class set and allow everyone to work effectively, but separately.
These lap desks will allow our students the flexibility to sit and learn wherever they are in the library. Alternatively, if we have to move to a different location, my students will all still have comfortable seating that is conducive to work.
Our students are learning to type on computers, coding, and completing maker space activities. This isn't very feasible or organized on the floor and gets crowded at tables. These lap desks will allow our students to keep their materials organized and separated while they focus on their lesson tasks.
