We are a Title I community school with a diverse population of learners. There are many cultures, races, and socioeconomic factors influencing our students and families. We have over 13 different languages spoken in our hallways. Many of our students are in transitional housing which can be either hotels, family homeless shelter, and living with other families. There is a large Spanish speaking population in our area.
Our community school brings many resources into the school for our students and families including basic needs like food, clothing, shoes.
We have health and social services that are school based. Many of the students have experienced trauma in their lives and have behaviors that communicate these anxieties. We teach social emotional learning lessons to help students identify and communicate emotions appropriately. Having choices in the classroom and in their day is important to these young students. This project will create flexible seating in our school library which will be used as a pilot for classroom integration. Giving students an opportunity to choose their own space to read in and defining that space with flexible seating will contribute to their success.
