Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a first year teacher, in a low income neighborhood finding an extraordinary place to loose yourself in a good book isn't easy. I know it's even harder for a classroom full of energetic 5th graders. I want reading to be fun, interesting, fulfilling and rewarding. I want my students to know reading is essential and gratifying, and it isn't only about a grade. I think if they have a place where they love to visit; it can increase their likelihood to find a place in a book that they'll love to visit as well. An extraordinary classroom library for my students is what I'm seeking; a place where they can lay, sit, or curl up while increasing literacy. My first year as a teacher at Sawyer Elementary school begins soon. I'm very eager and bubbling over with wonderful ideas for my classroom library. To start, we'll need tons of books of all genres of course, and stickers so I can secretly color code them according to grade level. I'll even allow students to give their insight about what books they'd like to see in our library. We'll need a nice rug to sit, lay and enjoy our books, two or three nice chairs for my students who will prefer to sit upon their visit and one for myself while doing read aloud or having book talks. Friendly stuffed animals they can cuddle with or just use for decoration to set the tone. And to truly make their moment magical, lights- beautiful, colorful lights that I can switch on when the library is open for visitation. This library will to be so extraordinary I'll have to create a group schedule to ensure that all my students will have a chance to enjoy their favorite book in their favorite place. I can even use this amazing place as a reward for a job well done and grant students extra time and additional visits. I feel that relieving pressure and finding a way to capture their interest is a start to increasing literacy. Allowing them to choose books and discuss what interest them and what they've learned will keep learning student- centered. And in this extraordinary place without notice they'll begin to grow. Total cost for materials $450.00 (approximately)
