“Bad libraries build collections. Good libraries build services. Great libraries build communities.” This quote by R. David Lankes inspires me every day. It is my goal to build a learning community in our school library, and I need your help to make that happen.
The students at my school are 7th and 8th graders who work very hard in all of their classes.
Many of the classes are based on the Engaged Learning Model (ELM) of teaching. This is project-based learning that allows our students to develop their communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills while learning the content standards at a deeper and more complex level. Many times there are groups assigned to come to the library and work collaboratively on their assignments. The library is a great space for this type of work because it allows for the collaboration that needs to take place. However, the library needs the proper furniture to make this an even more effective learning environment.
My Project
I have turned the library over to the students. By getting some of these art supplies, they will be able to paint the windows and the circulation desk and give the library their student personality.
It is my intent to make the library more student-centered than ever before.
The windows in the library run the length of the whole wall. I would like to turn the windows into a flexible space for students to showcase their favorite books. These markers are specific to windows. I know that my students will love having access to them so that they can brag about their favorite books!
