Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am excited to begin my third year as a 4th grade math teacher at an urban school in Los Angeles' Leimert Park. My future students will bring with them a wide array of skills, backgrounds, and experiences. It is my goal to hone in on these differences and use them as resources in the classroom so that we can all learn and grow from each other.
My students have the right to access books that reflect their needs culturally, emotionally, and socially.
My Project
It is my goal this year to diversify my library by increasing the variety of genres, reading levels, and content of the books that live in my classroom. Specifically, I want to increase the CHOICES my most struggling readers have to nonfiction and culturally diverse texts. I also want to increase the number of books I have that reflect learning disabilities such as autism, dyslexia, and anxiety.
My students have the right to access books that reflect their unique differences, learning styles, and interests.
Students will be able to identify with characters that better represent their own backgrounds and experiences. Realistically, I cannot fill my library all on my own. This project is my first stride towards giving my students the inclusive library that they deserve. I am asking for thirteen books including Big Red Lollipop, Jackie Robinson, and Dancing Home. I am also requesting some flexible seating for our reading area.
