Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is proud, energetic, and positive, but my 6th-8th grade students face some serious difficulties at our inner-city school. 100% of them qualify for free or reduced lunch. These kids are eager to learn and are dedicated to their education, but they need a fighting chance to get there. As the new school librarian, I reopened a space that had been closed for many years. The kids are excited to enjoy my library, but the titles are ridiculously outdated. In order to make the library the beating heart of the school, I need some decent materials!
My Project
Six months ago, I became a Teacher Librarian at a public middle school. After over a decade of no library funding, I walked into a disaster! The library had been shuttered. It was a dumping ground, and everything was caked in dust. Once I cleaned up and began to dig into the collection, it was clear that it was in sad shape. With half empty shelves of ancient titles, I knew I had to restock- and quickly!
I need the hottest fiction titles to entice kids to get off their phones and open a book!
My grand opening has sparked attention and is attracting kids to the library, but it breaks my heart when they ask for titles and I don't have them. If I don't get some new books in here ASAP, I'll lose the interests of the kids. How can I be an effective librarian without the proper tools- books? I need books.
