Leveling the Playing Field Through Leveled Readers
My students need the A to Z Mysteries set, Choose your own Adventure Series, The Dork Diaries and Step Into Reading Level 5 Book Set for our Reading Intervention Time.
As a Reading Intervention Teacher I see different kids each hour that need intensive reading support. We have an environment that is free from judgement and has become a space where all can make mistakes without judgement or letter grades hanging over their head. We just love to read!
Our school is primarily African American and over 60% qualify for Free and/or Reduced lunches.
Although in a smaller district we would qualify to receive Title 1 funding, our large district is such high need that we are only allotted a specific number of schools that get that amazing financial support. We fall right below the line. We are high need with low funding.
My individual groups consist of students that are primarily African American and many of their families struggle financially. They are extremely hard workers who need more exposure to materials that they do not have at home. Because my students range from Kindergarten up to Fifth Grade, we need a large variety of books with high interest levels.
Our biggest need is for our 4th and 5th grade students who are currently reading at 2nd and 3rd grade levels. They want to read books that relate to pre-middle school kids but most are much too difficult. That is what my students are hoping for!
My Project
We use a intensive reading program that is split up into two sections; the first 30 minutes are devoted to learning new sounds, sight words, and irregular syllables. During that time there is an oral recitation time and a writing time. The last 30 minutes are devoted to students reading books that they are interested in. By receiving these books our 4th and 5th grade students will be able to choose reading material that they are interested in, and practice what skills they have been taught. Our goal is having students who want to read and are comfortable with the level that is offered. Overall, we just want books that our pre-middle school kids look forward to reading!
It is defeating to be an older elementary student struggling with reading for whatever reason and have to read books intended for primary students.
By providing the high interest, lower level chapter books. My students will want to read and will continue on their journey of becoming better readers.
