My Students

This year, I am blessed to teach 23 curious, scholars from a large diverse background. My students have acquired labels such as English Language Learners, low-income students, and behaviorally challenged students, but they're so much more. My students are children and just that, and they deserve the world. I know that these students will grow up to be engineers, doctors, and entrepreneurs that will have a large impact on the world.

The diversity in my classroom makes it a special place to learn.

My students come from all over the world which makes the environment so rich and creates so many learning opportunities for everyone in our community. I teach in an inclusion classroom where some students are on Individual educational plans. Historically, students who learn in different ways from others or need special services were taught in a separate class. My class serves all kinds of learners. My students love to learn from each other, work together and help one another.

My Project

Having a leveled library with grade appropriate books is very essential for growing readers. The books I have in my library now are not only outdated and not appropriate for my students reading level. Also, the books are about people or things my students can not relate to or find interesting. Books that are current and grade appropriate is very important. Leveled text books from level B to D on the Fountas and Pinnell reading level scale will give my students the opportunity to practice reading independently with text that is likely to support effective processing, including reading comprehension. This will allow students to become better more confident readers.

Having a listening center is also important for student growth as readers.

This allows students to listen to books and follow along. This is important given the fact that lots of the time only time my students are read to during a read out loud. Giving students the opportunity to listen to books and follow along can help increase a students vocabulary, sight work recognition and comprehension.

Kindergarten is the grade that letters and sounds come together to make words and the love for reading is built. To ensure that I grow readers that love to read and deeply understand text; it is very important that I provide leveled books with grade appropriate text that is interesting that appeals to the demographic of my students.
