Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching in my district for two years has helped me see the need for outside resources. I am a third grade Teach For America teacher at Ryan Elementary School in San Jose, California. This will be my third year in an elementary classroom. With funding from DonorsChoose, last year I was able to help my students increase their grade level in reading by an average of 1.8 years. This would not have been possible without providing leveled reading for my students. Teacher access to Reading A-Z was donated to me last year, allowing me to print black line masters and provide students with sets of books appropriate to their reading level. When students passed a set of books, they were given the next level, allowing them to make huge improvements in reading and comprehension.
I expect to help my children make an average of two years growth this year. To accomplish this challenging goal, leveled A-Z books will be necessary. My school is unable to provide unlimited copies due to budget constraints. Copying A-Z books not only helps invest students interest, it also gives my students a variety of books to keep at home. These copies are so valuable to them. I must use an outside vendor to provide my class with these books.
I am asking for a donation of copy money. This will allow me to provide my class with their first three sets of books. The books they will be reading are very educational. Not only do they help increase reading skills, they also promote interest in variety of topics including history, the environment, manners, and science. Please consider funding this proposal. It will vastly improve reading and increase knowledge for twenty third grade students.
