I am a member of the Teach for America charter corps in Oklahoma. I teach third grade in a high-need community. Seventy percent of my school's students are Hispanic, most of whom are English language learners, and we participate in Reading First because so many of their families fall below the poverty line. Many of my students are currently reading below grade level. To fix this, each of my students has an ambitious, individualized reading goal that he or she is working hard to achieve.
Although I have collected some donated books for my students, it can be difficult for them to judge the appropriate level of book they should be reading. Leveled readers will enable them to know that they are reading a book at a level that is challenging to them, but not so challenging that they become frustrated and give up on the book. These leveled readers will also help my students measure their success towards their reading goal as they move up to a new level.
With your help, my students will achieve their reading goal and be prepared not just for fourth grade, but for college in the future. Improving their reading abilities will have an effect on the rest of their lives. Thank you for your help!
