Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a wonderful Title I school in Texas. My school is composed of a diverse group of amazing students. Seventy percent of the students in this area are economically disadvantaged. The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and in order to ensure they have meals to eat each weekend, many students receive backpacks full of food from a local food pantry. Each year I am amazed at the situations and struggles some of the students have to endure and overcome.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best each and every day.
My classroom acts as a sanctuary where students feel accepted and can achieve success in a safe and loving environment.
My Project
Leveled and diverse books will help my students to grow as readers. I have a wide variety of reading levels in my classroom. They range from C all the way to I. My students need books that are at their independent reading level so that they can practice reading "just right" books. We read every single day at school, so it is important that my students have variety in their reading choices, a high volume of books, and that the books are of high interest to them. I believe that my students will achieve their reading goals that they have set for themselves this year with a variety of leveled readers in our classroom library with the Guided Reading Collections.
I firmly believe that young children need hands on materials to explore; which is why I have chosen math manipulatives and games that allow their minds to grow.
Manipulatives such as the Geostix, Pattern Block Design Cards, and Geometry sets will enable them to put their creativity to good use. They will be able to utilize critical thinking skills while practicing Math concepts in a hands-on way. While I pull small groups, the other students will have the opportunity to be independent learners and strengthen their math and reading skills. Games such as the Measurement center and Spot the Ten Frame, will allow them to independently practice important math concepts.
