My Students

This first grade class is part of an AMAZING school located in a small "community-centered" town just outside Los Angeles.

Our class is comprised of 25 high energy, super excited students that can't wait to learn something new everyday!

It is a joy to be around these 6-8 year old boys and girls everyday and see the light bulbs go off, hear their fabulous thoughts, and experience their tremendous growth. They are ROCK STARS and I am honored to be their teacher.

My Project

First grade students grow so much, especially in the area of reading proficiency. Our school is establishing itself as a Balanced Literacy school.

One of the major components of Balanced Literacy is for students to access text at their personal reading level DAILY.

We call these texts "Just Right" and students are taught to "shop" for books that are at a level that is not too easy or too hard. While our fiction selection is rich, students are very eager to get their hands on non-fiction texts at their "just right" level. These leveled non-fiction texts would greatly support a more balanced learning experience for these first grade students.
