Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a reading recovery teacher who services low income second language learners. I would like to obtain leveled readers and manipulatives that students will use in small groups and in one on one reading sessions. I would also like a digital camera/recorder to record students as they work and have a visual for parents to see and hear their child.
Many students, I am finding, do not have a large bank of English vocabulary in order to be as successful as peers who are monolingual in other districts and as a result of this, their struggle to read is a bit more of a challenge. Many also do not have books at home that would allow practice nightly and many have parents who are illiterate themselves and can't offer the necessary support their child needs with homework.
With the leveled readers, manipulatives, and a digital camera, students will have access to books that are "just right" for them, practice making words and taking them apart, reviewing sight words and word chucks, and their parents would have the opportunity to see what their child does in small groups and in an one to one situation.
Reading is the key to every child's success in life and I would like the opportunity to enrich the lives of these struggling readers.
