Do you remember the first time you were able to read a book on your own? All of a sudden the whole world opened up to you!
For many of my struggling special education students independent reading is a daunting task.
Many have learning disabilities which can be a barrier to reading. However, early and explicit intervention can make all the difference for these students.
My Project
The kindergarten kit from Leveled Literacy Intervention is a reading intervention which addresses all five components of reading; phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension from the pre-reading level to a proficient end-of-the-year kindergarten level.
LLI is a small-group, supplementary intervention designed for children who find reading and writing difficult. LLI is designed to bring children quickly up to grade-level competency in 14 to 18 weeks on average.
LLI serves those students who need intensive support to achieve grade-level competency. These children are the lowest achieving children in the classroom who are not receiving another supplementary intervention. Each lesson in the LLI system also provides specific suggestions for supporting English language learners who are selected for the program.
The kit contains 70 different books; colored for school and black-and-white take home books to build a "just right" home library.
It also contains a writing book and a wonderfully designed teacher's manual to help students build a great "tool box" for decoding and understanding text. The included technology package allows teachers to track student growth.
Currently, my district has no budget for literacy materials. Outside funding is the only way to put these materials in my students' hands.
