Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the future leaders of the world. My ESL classroom is in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood, with many students travelling from outside communities to attend. Making our classroom a diverse and powerful learning community. Each day, my students take turns leading in morning meeting, calendar, number talks, and transitions. I love watching each student discover their voice and take charge of our classroom’s learning success. Observing how positive and engaged students are in their learning leaders, makes for a valuable opportunity to expand their interests and learning circles. My students love hands on learning that challenges their critical thinking skills and allows them to be a member of a team. I want to continue to foster their partnerships by ensuring that each student has the resources and materials they need to keep curiosity alive. I am lucky to be a part of my student’s learning journey.
My Project
A leveled reading listening library will enhance student's interest in reading while challenging their comprehension abilities. Giving students access to audio books will encourage all learners to engage in texts with their peers. Allowing for group book discussions and a deep dive into their understanding of the text.
With a majority of my students being English Language Learners, audiobooks will help improve their vocabulary development, reading accuracy, and fluency.
Students who struggle in these areas will also be able to participate in more complex texts that will challenge their comprehension skills and boost their confidence. Having books ranging from level H to level N will provide continued use of audiobooks as students improve their reading abilities throughout the year.
Additionally, chapter books are popular amongst the students in the class. Having access to The Magic Tree House Audiobook Collection will ensure that all students have the chance to confidently choose a chapter book from the library because they have access to necessary audio supports. A listening library is a fun way to encourage my students to explore many genres and book complexities, supporting students who are all reading levels.
