Dear Donors of Donors Choose,
I am a first grade teacher in a very economically challenged area. I desperately need a leveled reading library in my classroom. I have many books for "read alouds" but not many at levels my students can read independently.
A leveled reading library would allow my students to quickly locate appropriately leveled materials. The library I have selected is organized in such a fashion that students can be assigned an entire bucket of books to choose from. The library also comes with guidelines for each level so that I will be able to add some of my own books in the appropriate levels. The system also includes matching labels for buckets and books to easily identify what goes where.
Our school has a leveled library that teachers share. It, however, is not always convenient for teachers or accessible to students. The biggest problem with the school wide shared leveled library is that we are limited to the number of books we can check out for classroom use. I believe that children are more likely to be enthusiastic readers if they are allowed to choose the titles and topics for their independent reading. These choices must be provided at each child's independent reading level. The only way to achieve this is to have numerous books at various levels of reading.
I imagine a good leveled library will take a few years to build. I would like to start now with levels A-K. These books would cover all of the readers in my classroom.
