Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My twenty-one fourth-grade students from a neighborhood in Hartford are caring, creative, and love to have fun in the classroom! We can often be found using various methods to solve problems collaboratively, devouring books, and sharing our writing with others.
We have created a classroom community that expects excellence from all, specifically by showing respect for ourselves, for others, and for the environment at all times.
These expectations have helped us all persevere even when things challenge us.
Our classroom needs various resources and materials so that my students can receive the education that they deserve. I want to provide them with a classroom where they can discover new ideas and unlock their full potential. They are a wonderful group that brings a smile to my face everyday!
My Project
The range of levels available in my library are truly abysmal. I have students that are reading from between a kindergarten level to a fourth grade level, but my library mostly consists of books that are at a level that will frustrate my students. Our school is lacking in resources so it's hard for me to find texts that are accessible for all my students. For instance, I have four students reading at a Fountas & Pinnell level P (at about a third grade level), and there are only two titles available in our school's book room that have to be shared between all the teachers who have students reading at a level P.
These books will be used by students during our guided reading block for partner reading.
Students will sit with a partner and read a text at their instructional level out loud. When one page is done, the other student will summarize what they just read. Then they will switch roles. This will help my students develop their comprehension skills and fluency skills.
