Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Since this is my first year teaching, I have struggled trying to figure out how to help my students improve reading throughout this year. However, I finally think that I am getting a good idea of what it is going to take to move my students to where they need to be. I have assessed what level each of my students are on. I know what skills each student needs to work on. I am ready to start individualizing my instruction so I can help my struggling readers as much as possible. However, when I began looking in my library for books to match these students abilities, I realized that I am lacking the resources to encourage these students to work hard and read books that will help them get better at comprehension.
One of the biggest reasons I am lacking these resources is because I am a 5th grade teacher in a grades 5-8 middle school. We simply do not have 3rd grade books in our building. However, many of my students are on a third grade level. While that is not ideal, it is realistic. These same students have found reading difficult and boring mostly because they cannot understand the books that they have been reading.
My request is for book sets that are on levels for my students. These book sets would give my struggling readers a feeling of success and chances to work on comprehension skills with books that they can read. Please consider funding this proposal so I can begin to help my students attain the reading level that they should be at and start to feel successful with reading.
