Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every day my students engage in literacy learning through the instructional model known as Daily 5. An important component of Daily 5 is that students have access to a large amount of books at their current reading level.
My students are energetic, first grade, English Language Learners (ELLs).
The majority come from low income households where a language other than English is spoken. Last school year I had families from Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, Iraq, and Russia! I hope to have such a diverse group of learners this year, as well.
Many of my students enter first grade at below grade level for reading. Unfortunately, first grade is also the grade where the most gains in reading levels is expected. Even those students entering at level A are expected to reach level J by the end of the year. Oftentimes, I find that many students are frustrated by books which are too difficult for them. At this time, the majority of our classroom library contains books above their level.
My Project
Should my project be funded, my students will have access to two hundred eighty leveled (A-G) NEW books at their varying levels. They will have access to them throughout the day, since they will be housed in our classroom library. They will especially use them during our literacy time, as they engage in reading and writing about books at their level. A key component of the instructional model I use, the Daily 5, is that students have access to quality books at their level.
Donations will vastly improve my students literacy learning.
My students love to read but need access to quality books at their level. First grade is a wonderful year where beginning readers become fluent readers. With your help, this can become a reality in my classroom!
