Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Washington, D.C. public school in Petworth. The majority of our students come from low-income families and many of our students are English language learners.
As an extended day school in an urban area, students spend a lot of time indoors.
With little space to run around and not enough time in the day to play, yoga provides students an opportunity to stretch, breathe, and rejuvenate within the confines of the classroom.
Through yoga, students can enhance their physical health and socio-emotional well-being through mindfulness, breathing, and meditation.
My Project
Little Flower Yoga provides a full training program for children's yoga. This training provides an opportunity for me to learn about how to design specific classes, allowing me to bring yoga and mindfulness to my students within the confines of my classroom.
In this training, I will be able to learn about trauma-informed yoga practices for children that will promote their physical and socio-emotional development.
Unlike other activities, yoga can be done within the confines of the classroom with little to no additional materials required. Students can learn important stress-relieving methods through yoga and mindfulness, such as specific breathing and stretching exercises.
