The students at our rural Mississippi High School come from various socio-economic backgrounds. Most of them come from middle-income, blue collar situations and are extremely bright and willing to learn on a deeper level. 25% of the 68,000 population are under the age of 18. With this young population, every effort must be made to ensure their academic success. Only 19% of the county population holds a bachelor's degree or better with 21% of the population is living at or below the poverty level with a $38K median income.
More than 50% of our students are on free-reduced meals, indicating over half our students below poverty level.
Most of the students live in very rural communities with agricultural backgrounds. Internet and technology education is at a bare minimum, because students do not have the resources to practice technological skills. Because of this lack of resources, we need to provide these talented athletes with the equipment they need to be successful on the field!
My Project
The soccer team at our rural Mississippi high school consists of girls and boys from 7th through 12th grades. The program trains students to become physically and mentally fit through teamwork activities, endurance training, velocity tests, and stamina development. Students compete on the local, district and possibly state level and often continue their career at the junior college and senior college level. Having the proper training equipment available, such as the basic equipment requested in this grant, will ensure the safe development of required skills and endurance. Through the purchase of this equipment, students will have access to the same types of training equipment other schools have and will be on a more level playing field for competition.
