Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
No internet! No iPod! No iPad! No Nook! That is the reality for many of the children in my classroom.
I am a fourth grade teacher in an Integrated Co-teaching Classroom in upper Manhattan.
My students are a mix of regular education students and students with special needs. The odds are stacked against them: many speak English as a second language, some have learning disabilities, and many have families that struggle to make do with poverty level income. These are some of the challenges that my students face.
My Project
I have already found success with computer based programs such as Accelerated Reader (we have achieved the highest level, Master Class five years in a row) and IXL, an adaptive math program. I have seen students that struggle to put pencil to paper become so engaged that they spend literally an hour solving math problems on a computer. Children that have difficulty focusing on a teacher directed lesson become fully engaged when they can use an interactive app, watch a colorful video, or publish their writing using voice technology.
With the help of technology I am able to differentiate content, process, and product. Groups are fluid and flexible, allowing children to work successfully at their own level. Students that are computer savvy wear "Tech Support" name tags and gain confidence and higher self-esteem by assisting their peers.
I need just three more Chromebooks in order to have a complete class set, especially necessary as at this time my school has no Technology teacher.
In any private school in this country all the students have technology in one form or another at their fingertips at any time.
It is my goal to level the playing field for my students, at school at least. For the past year I have been working towards becoming a 1:1 classroom. By supporting this project my goal will finally be a reality, and my kids will have an equal opportunity! Thank you for Leveling the Playing Field in my classroom!
