My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

My students love to read. It doesn't matter the genre or story; if it's a book, my students want to read it! This passion for literacy has created some exceptional readers in my class. Many students are learning at advanced levels! While I have some books that match the current comprehension level of advanced students, my inventory is limited. My students need new, exciting texts that will help them develop their skills even more!

I am requesting books leveled books, which describes specific texts that feature storylines and structures that are appropriate for a particular grade level.

Since many of my students are reading "above" grade level books, they need books that are on a Level S (books that are at a fourth-grade level). These new texts will help me to continue to push my students to become the best readers.
