This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you ever pick up a book and get so lost in it that you can't put it down? That is the hope I have for the students in my classroom.
I teach in an ICT classroom where 40% of the students have disabilities and the remaining students are general education.
Most of the students are English Language Learners and the majority of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. They are great students who work hard. I strongly believe that the achievement gap can be overcome and I see it firsthand in my classroom with the progress that the students are making. Our school focuses on an inquiry approach to learning as opposed to just teaching students procedures. This is especially important in helping to develop their critical thinking skills.
My Project
Our classroom engages in independent reading everyday. The goal is for students to sustain in silent reading for at least 45 minutes. However, we lack the resources necessary for students to read high-interest "just right books." Most of the books have been used over many years and are ripped and worn out.
This project will make a difference in the lives of my students.
When students have books in front of them that are at their reading level they are more likely to get lost in the book and to not become frustrated. Reading "just right books" also helps them to make progress and move up in reading levels. Your donations would be greatly appreciated.
