Lettuce Grow Our Own Veggies In Our Greenhouse

My students need wrapping and clamps to reinforce our school greenhouse due to it being vandalized over the summer.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Bellich's classroom raised $312

This project is fully funded

My Students

Help us rebuild our greenhouse. We need polyurethane wrapping and clamps to spruce up our greenhouse that was vandalized. We want to begin our seeds for our campus garden but our greenhouse needs a lot of work before we can use it. We have sections missing and need to capture the sun's warmth.

Our school is a high poverty school with some of the most motivated students a teacher could ask for.

They love to learn by hands-on experiences and love working outside at our school. Many students live in areas with no green space so we want to give our children, through this project, the opportunity to learn about growing vegetables and flowers in a greenhouse and learning to cut down on the carbon footprint that we are leaving when we are not environmentally conscious. Our school has a high ethnic population which adds to the rich flavor of our school. It is exciting to see children from different countries learning to plant a garden with vegetables that they have never eaten. Of course, when we harvest our food, we prepare the vegetables for our children. The greenhouse is certainly an opportunity that will have a positive affect on our children and offer experiences that will last a lifetime.

My Project

We start out by planting various seeds in small containers and placing them in our greenhouse. We watch them begin to peek through the soil and grow into recognizable plants. After our plants get large enough, we plant them in our school garden. We continue to watch, water and weed our plants until they produce edible vegetables. Children are delighted to go to the garden and pick their vegetables. They are way more likely to eat a vegetable that they have grown than one that they know nothing about. We fixed mustard greens for our children and about 50% of them came back for seconds. Wow, what an accomplishment for children who live on fast foods. Many of our flowers we plant on campus and also send a grocery bag filled with plants home with children to plant in their yards or grandparents' yard. We hope our children will understand the importance of greening up our world and will experience the joy of starting vegetation from seed and gardening.

This project will encourage our young children to become environmentalists.

They will begin with their own school community and these experiences will give them lifetime memories to carry into adulthood to help them widen their environmental ideals to their ever widening world. We strive to have our children become active members of society that give back to the earth so future generations will have a safe productive world in which to live.
