This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a room full of budding scientists who LOVE hands-on learning. I am a 2nd grade teacher who is madly in love with science. Think of me as a real life Ms. Frizzle! Since a magic school bus is too much to ask for, I would so much appreciate help for my students to get all the materials to plant a garden. This includes rocks, sod/dirt, seeds, watering cans, shovels, stakes...anything to fill a 6'x8' empty planter and teach them how to grow vegetables. Long term, hands-on STEM science projects such as this one are vital in raising a generation of scientifically literate children, which is why I became a teacher. Thank you for your consideration!
My Project
Hands-on learning is the deepest form of education. By growing a class garden, children learn the lifecycle of a plant first hand, cooperation and teamwork, as well as learning about data collection and long term observation. It is a full learning experience that not only increases self esteem but gives the students a sense of community and accomplishment. Also, it is important for this generation to become aware first hand that food doesn't come from the supermarket, but from the hard work of farmers and agrarians. Plus, what if someday they need to grow their own food? Thank you for your consideration of our class STEM project.
