My Project

In the Agricultural Education classroom, students enjoy learning by doing, and it's my goal as a teacher to create as many hands-on learning opportunities as possible. Purchasing a Flex Farm Hydroponic Growing Tower will impact middle and high school students in a few positive ways. The first is that students will learn about growing and harvesting lettuce using a hydroponic system in the classroom. Secondly, students will have the opportunity to enjoy fresh produce grown within the school.

Middle and High School students enrolled in agricultural education courses, will utilize vertical hydroponic technology to grow and harvest lettuce and other vegetable crops.

By using this sustainable growing tower, students will start crops from seed, utilize growing nutrients to promote growth, monitor growth, and harvest crops. Experiments can also be completed to determine the effects of different growth factors on plants and what combination of light, nutrients, etc. will promote optimal growth.

In addition to creating a hands-on learning opportunity, students who eat school lunches will have the opportunity to enjoy fresh and locally grown produce in the school lunch salad bar.
