Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families that struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.
My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.
They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.
My Project
My students will create handmade gifts with the blank watercolor cards by using stencils with messages such as "Hope" and rubber stamps to create 'thumbprint' flowers, animals, and creative scenes. They will cut out shapes from the vibrant, colorful cardstock to add a garden of flowers, that will pop in contrast to the watercolor sky. They will use the black and silver pens to write uplifting messages on the cards. The fun washi tape will be used as a border for the cards. My students will exchange letters with seniors living in convalescent centers who are lonely and who want a connection with a young person. They will also make cards to send to veterans and to terminally ill children who are staying in hospitals and need a message of support to give them strength. Last year, my students made cards with messages such as "Stay Strong" and "I Believe in You". Sending cards and writing letters benefited both my students, who are working on their writing skills, and the recipients, who appreciated a thoughtful, handmade card delivered through the mail.
My students will learn the importance of being generous and giving back to the community as they practice random acts of kindness through this letter writing and card-crafting project.
Dalai Lama advised, "Be kind, whenever possible. It is always possible." My hope is that practicing acts of kindness on a regular basis by reaching out to those who are sick or living far from their loved ones will help my students develop stronger hearts and a lifelong dedication to helping others.
