Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students were not taught to read, write or even their letters because they were in special education. One student learned to talk for the first time after introducing food. One student bounced around schools because of his behavior. One student lives in a one bedroom house with 14 kids. One students made her first friend last year because she was taken out of the classroom to meet other students. Another is a little boy that likes to sew dresses and wear them. His mother and I support him to be himself at all times possible.
My Project
I have tools to teach phonics and handwriting but I need new tools to teach the basics of letter Identification. These learning tools will help my students get moving and have new and innovative ways to interact with letters with the hopes of learning to read and write! I plan to use the balance beams daily to have my students construct the different letters out of the interchangeable parts. They will walk on them and interact with them in ways they have not before. This promotes physical fitness and hands on learning which encourages metacognition and meta memory to move the knowledge from short term to long term memory. The letter builders are another way to get my students interacting with the letters and constructing the letters. The writing claws will assist them with learning to hold a pencil correctly, many for the first time. Lastly, the Learning letter centers will be fun cooperative learning exercises that I would arrange for them during independent/partner learning time. All of these are many learning techniques I have researched from my Educational Psychology courses in Grad School. Most of my students IQ says they can learn it but they have not been thoroughly or effectively taught. I know I can teach them because I know their potential and I know I am capable with the help of thwse teaching resources. Thank you!
