Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is easy at times to look at my students in their required uniforms and forget all that they face at home. However, I am quickly reminded by the seemingly inexplicable meltdown, the mention of how dad is in prison, or the child who is always falling asleep because it is too loud at home or not enough room in a bed shared by three siblings. My students come from impoverished homes and face diversity on a regular basis. They also come from Spanish speaking homes, so they do not have a foundation in English that many children come to school with.
Despite all of their challenges, my students are excited to learn and give their best to do so every day.
I love that I get the opportunity to provide them with a safe, consistent, and loving environment. While they come to me below grade level, the growth I get to see in them is all the more exciting!
My Project
Many of my students are still learning their letter sounds and building their fluency in word building. During our reading centers when I’m working with a small group, I need to know that my students in stations around the room are engaged and learning still.
These activities will help provide meaningful practice in these essential building blocks of reading.
The word building activities will be used in the word work center and will help students segment their words into sounds.
The beginning sounds activities will be used in our phonics center. Along with being able to blend and segment regular words, students also have to be able to recognize sight words. The sorting activity and the rocket bags will help them do that.
